Working with addictions

As a doctor in addiction services, I worked in teams who were experienced in supporting people with substance use problems. Through this work, I developed a non-judgmental, compassionate and practical approach to working with those whose problems are often added to by stigma and confusion.

I worked psychotherapeutically in a homeless hostel for several years, often with those whose complex problems included drugs or alcohol. I believe it is possible to work therapeutically at any stage of an addiction and do not ask for abstinence for starting work, as long as you are able to attend sessions without being intoxicated.
